2008 President’s Letter

As we begin a new year I would like to introduce myself and provide you with an update of my 2008 vision for the VAENA State Council.

I have been a nurse for 30 years graduating from Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Johnstown, PA. I started my career as a new grad in ICU and moved to the ED world in the early 80s. I have worked all over the US in small rural settings to large urban settings- thanks to being a Marine Corps spouse.

In 1997 my career focus changed when I was bitten by the Injury Prevention bug. I became involved in Child passenger safety (one of the first nurse CPS technicians) and found a new career path. After a few years of working for non profit grant funded education programs I was given the opportunity to get back in the clinical setting by working at a Level I Trauma center setting up the hospital based CPS program at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. I have become and advocate for injury prevention and legislation directed at public safety and healthcare. I have served on a variety of local, state and national boards and committees dealing with injury prevention and legislative issues.

As your 2008 President I bring a fairly diverse professional background. In addition I feel strongly about professional growth and development and ENA provides us with a vast array of services to meet the needs of our diverse membership.

As for my vision for 2008 I have highlighted a number of goals:

Government Affairs:
1. Increase awareness of current health care issues and public safety pending legislation at the state and federal levels.
2. Further develop the 411 program

Injury Prevention:
1. Provide quarterly training courses for new providers
2. Update the membership on potential program opportunities

TNCC/ENPC:
1. Continue to provide educational opportunities
2. Increase the number of instructors in the Commonwealth

Membership:
1. Maintain communication to State Council Members and local chapter officers
2. Develop informational boards for ED staff awareness

Communication:
1. Send monthly updates to Chapter leaders on the non meeting months
2. Provide current information on the web site and enhance chapter level section
3. Continue to support the efforts of membership chair in providing current information to new members

In closing I would like to encourage all members to get and stay involved this year. There are so many opportunities but you need to get connected to stay up to date on ENA activities. Start now by attending your local chapter meetings and when possible attend State and National meetings. ENA provides us with a great opportunity for personal and professional growth – be it taking TNCC, becoming a CEN or being active in local ENA activities. Make 2008 the year you become involved in your professional association!
